film synopsis
Set in a grand house in the lush English countryside on Mother’s Day 1924, a young housekeeper named Jane (Odessa Young) keeps one last intimate assignation with her secret upper-class lover, Paul (Josh O’Connor), before he departs to marry another woman. Director Eva Husson (Girls of The Sun, Bang Gang: A Modern Love Story) turns the genre of prim British period piece on its head with this lushly photographed, languidly paced erotic story of an impossible relationship. But the intimacy is always underscored by the societal pressures of class and postwar grief over an entire generation of young men, a loss achingly portrayed by the privileged, bereaved parents (Colin Firth and Olivia Colman) who reside in the estate. Screenwriter Alice Birch deftly adapts Graham Swift’s best-selling, award-winning novel that, along with a superb cast, paints an exquisite exploration of sex, grief, class and ambition.
