film synopsis
While stuck on summer holiday in sun-soaked Dorset with her gratingly upbeat and “normal” family, socially awkward misfit teen AJ (Nell Barlow in a star-making performance) is convinced she’s about to have the worst week of her life. That all changes when she meets Isla (Ella-Rae Smith), the flirtatious and dreamy local lifeguard, and unexpectedly falls head over heels. After a night of clumsy firsts, AJ finds herself navigating a fleeting first love while also contending with her newfound identity. Writer-director Marley Morrison’s debut feature is at once a feel-good coming-of-age story, an achingly tender romance and a poignant family drama, encompassing many of the gloriously complex pains of young adulthood. With her floral print bucket hat, rose-tinted sunglasses and unique blend of teen angst and environmentally-conscious crusade, Sweetheart introduces the world to an unforgettable new character in the teen film canon.
