Cocktail Cinema

Presented in partnership with Palm Springs Art Museum and Palm Springs International Film Festival

This summer, Cocktail Cinema explores stories of youthful rebellion, imagination, and transformation through three groundbreaking films. Dogtown and Z-Boys (2001), The Infiltrators (2019), and But I’m a Cheerleader (1999) each offer distinct, genre-bending portraits of young people rewriting the rules of belonging, identity, and resistance. From skate crews and activist collectives to queer youth redefining expectations, these films capture the power of youth as a cultural force: visionary, fearless, and deeply creative.

Join us for a season of cinema and conversation that celebrates the ways young people challenge norms and shape new futures.

DOGTOWN AND Z BOYS

Skateboarding legend Stacy Peralta directs this look back at the birth of modern skateboarding via an examination of the Zephyr skating team, who brought Southern California surf style and street culture to the burgeoning sport and, searching for new spots and ways to skate, employed the handiwork of the government and corporate structure in ways the original architects could never have imagined. Packed with vintage skate footage and a wall-to-wall soundtrack of 60s and 70s rock, this award-winning documentary captures the raw energy and rebellious spirit of a youth movement that changed the sport forever.

THE INFILTRATORS

Blending documentary and reenactment, The Infiltrators tells the true story of undocumented youth activists who subjected themselves to being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in order to expose abuses inside a for-profit immigration detention facility. Their mission was to connect detainees with legal aid while gathering firsthand evidence of systemic injustices, all while knowing they could be deported at any time. With the suspense of a heist film and the emotional impact of a social justice documentary, this film reveals the power of youthful fearlessness, strategy, and collective action in the face of a broken system.

BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER

This pastel-colored cult classic follows Megan, a high school cheerleader sent to a conversion therapy camp by her parents and friends who suspect she might be gay. As Megan navigates the camp’s rigid expectations, she begins to question the gendered/social norms around her and discovers a queer community that offers acceptance and love. Satirical and sharp, the film takes aim at gender roles and conformity with humor and heart, ultimately celebrating queer identity and self-discovery. Featuring standout performances from Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall, RuPaul, and Michelle Williams, this film has earned its place as a beloved piece of queer cinema history.
